Has there been a time when the office of President has been cursed? Consider the alleged curse of Tecumseh. br /
br /
William Harrison, in the early 1800s, was Governor of the Indiana Territory. His job was to take land titles from the Indians to expedite the white mans invasion of Indian Territory. When the Indians rebelled against the system he was responsible for the defense of the white settlers. br /
br /
In 1811 Harrison was given permission to attack an Indian alliance consisting of the tribes who considered the famous chief of the Shawnee, Tecumseh, and his brother, Tenskwatawa, The Prophet, as their leaders. He and a thousand of his soldiers fought with the tribes at the Battle of Tippecanoe when Tecumseh was away seeking more allies. Harrison managed to disrupt Tecumsehs alliance. However in 1812 the tribes came back together and were gaining power, hoping to keep their land from being taken by the white settlers. At the Battle of the Thames in 1813 Harrison was victorious against the Indians and their allies, the British. During that battle he killed Tecumseh. The once-strong Indian alliance in that region was scattered, never again to be united. Years later the Whig Party nominated Harrison for President. John Tyler was nominated for Vice President. Tippecanoe and Tyler Too was the campaign slogan. br /

Harrisonbr /

Harrison (the famous Indian fighter) won the election and became the 9th President of the United States. He was elected in the Fall of 1840, a year ending in zero. He took office in March of 1841. After being in office less than a month he caught a cold. The cold developed into pneumonia and he died. He was the first President of the United States to die in office. br /
br /
Did Tecumseh, or his brother, the Prophet, pronounce a curse on the office of President, causing every president that was elected in a year ending in zero to die in office? Lets see. br /
br /
Presidents elected in years ending in zero occur only every 20 years. For example there would be no election in the year 1850. The election took place in 1848 and then another in 1852. br /
br /
Lincolnbr /
br /
Abraham Lincoln was born in February 12, 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky, the same day Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England. The next election of a President in a year ending in zero was in 1860. The winner was Abraham Lincoln who was President during the Civil War. He was re-elected in 1864 as the War was ending. br /
br /
Did Lincoln die while in office? Yes. While being entertained in Fords Theatre in Washington he was shot by John Wilkes Booth, an actor. br /
br /
Garfieldbr /
br /
James Garfield was born in Ohio in 1831. He was poor. He paid his way through college working various jobs, including driving canal boat teams. He became a classics professor and later president of the college. In his 30s he became a major general in the Union Army. br /
br /
The next election of a President in a year ending in zero was 1880. James Garfield ran against Democrat General Winfield Hancock. The winner was James Garfield. Garfield strengthened the Executive Branchs authority over the New York Customs House, which had previously been under the authority of a Senator.br /
br /
Did he die in office? Yes, he did. After only six months in office, he was shot by a disgruntled lawyer, Charles Guiteau. Guiteau had been disappointed at not being given a job by the President. Garfield lay in the White House for several weeks. Doctors were unable to find the bullet. So they brought in a metal detector (an induction-balance electrical device) invented by Alexander Graham Bell to try to find the bullet. They were still unable to find the bullet. br /
br /
President Garfield was taken to a New Jersey seaside where he eventually died from an infection and internal hemorrhage. He had been in office for only six months. Those around him later realized they had failed to find the bullet with the metal detector because of the metal bedsprings in his bed. The metal detector had been constantly sensing the metal bedsprings. br /

McKinleybr /
br /
William McKinley was born in Ohio in 1843. He was a teacher when the Civil War started. He enlisted in the Union Army. He was elected as a Republican to the House of Representatives. He served as governor of Ohio for two terms. br /
br /
The depression of 1893 slowed the economy. McKinley enacted large tariffs when he became president. McKinley intervened in Cuba militarily, freeing Cuba from the Spanish. He annexed Puerto Rico and the Philippines. br /
br /
William McKinley was elected to serve a second term as President in 1900, the turn of the century. His slogan was the full dinner pail. br /
br /
In September 1901 he was waiting in line at the Buffalo Pan-American Exposition when he was shot by an anarchist. He died eight days later. br /
br /
Hardingbr /
br /
Warren G. Harding was a Republican who was content to let the machine bosses set policies. Harding ran for the office of President in 1920. His campaign promise was less government in business and more business in government. He won with 60% of the popular vote. In August of 1923 he died of a heart attack. br /
br /
Rooseveltbr /
br /
Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected President in November of 1932. He was elected again in 1936. After that World War II was heating up. He was elected again in 1940. Although he had intelligence reports that the Japanese were going to bomb Pearl Harbor, there were no measures put into place to prevent such an attack. As Roosevelt expected, the outrage over the attack would motivate the US to go to war against both the Japanese and Germans. In that way the United States entered the war. br /
br /
After having been elected in 1932, 1936 and 1940, Roosevelt was elected to a fourth term in 1944. In April of 1945 he died in Warm Springs, Georgia from a cerebral hemorrhage. br /
br /
Kennedybr /
br /
John Kennedy ran against Richard Nixon in 1960 and won the Presidency. Shortly after his inauguration the Cuban exiles had been trained to take back their homeland. They invaded Cuba. But air support was not provided. It was the infamous Bay of Pigs fiasco. Castro won. br /
br /
Later the Soviet Union sought to install nuclear missiles in Cuba. When this was discovered, Kennedy implemented a quarantine on all offensive weapons bound for Cuba. The Russians backed down and stopped supplying Cuba with nuclear weapons. br /
br /
On November 22, 1963 he was shot by Lee Harvey Oswald as his motorcade was traveling through Dallas, Texas. br /
br /
Reaganbr /
br /
Ronald Reagan finally broke the curse of Tecumseh. He was elected in 1980, defeating Jimmy Carter badly. He was shot. But he did not die in office and Bush 43, Elected in 2000 did not die in office. br /
br /
Others?br /
br /
Were there any other United States Presidents who died in office but were not elected in a year ending in zero? Only one. Zachary Taylor, elected in 1848, died in office. He died in 1850 from an intestinal ailment after overeating at a 4th of July celebration. br /
br /
The score stands at 7 to 1. Between 1840 (the election of the killer of Tecumseh) and 1960 seven United States Presidents (out of 27) died in office after having been elected in years ending in zero. Only one died in office after having been elected in a year not ending in zero. That is beyond the limit of coincidence. Or is it? br /

The Futurebr /
br /
Abraham Lincoln said, If you want to test a mans character, give him power. br /
br /
Is it possible that a President can bring a curse upon himself? Consider the unusual example of the first President of Mozambique. He was, in fact, a Communist dictator. As a Communist, he was, of course, an athiest. br /
br /
Machelbr /
br /
Samora Machel was President of Mozambique from 1975 to 1986. What happened in 1986? Machel gave a speech to a group of people. He wanted to impress upon them the idea that God didn’t exist. He shouted that there is no God. He shouted that he (Machel) is God. Then he shook his fist in the air (as if speaking to God) and said, If you are God, kill me. br /
br /
Just a few days later God appears to have granted him his request. He and his Communist advisors boarded a plane. After the plane took off, it was struck by lightning. Ordinarily a plane struck by lightning does not crash. However, this one did. It crashed, killing all aboard, including Samora Machel, who had been shaking his fist at God. br /
