I’ll take the darker side and say “Knowing people in high places”.

Couple good answers have already been given. Exact key element needed may be whatever element is missing in a particular person.

Most people can be successful in some things, but not all things.

A good education, good judgment, and ability to differentiate between fantasy and reality are important to reach success, whether that is a high income, or a family with wonderful children — different standards for each person.

You cannot hope to be successful as a Basketball star, for example, if you are 5 ft 2 inches, and have a heart ailment. Hoping for that, would be fantasy.

Overall, all things being equal, the key element in being successful would be to First, TRY.

If you never try, or start, you won’t make it.
A journey of a hundred miles, starts with a single step.
